This quarter in 4th grade, we're continuing to work on the notes BAG for the first 4 weeks while we practice an Orff arrangement using recorders and xylophones. We are also just learning to read the notes in the treble clef staff, so students will be composing their very own recorder melody on the treble clef staff which we will then perform for each other. During weeks 5-10 we're going to shift our focus to the note E on recorder. We will be learning songs using E and performing Orff arrangements that include xylophones and recorders. During the last five weeks we are also going expand our solfege range to a full octave, and will be extending our singing range. By the end of the quarter, fourth graders will be the master of four notes on the recorders and ready to take on more difficult musical challenges in fifth grade!
4th graders have been playing recorders as well, and are really beginning to master the notes B, A, and G. We're going to keep our focus on these three notes into the 3rd quarter and expand our ability to perform with them. In weeks 1-4 we'll be focusing on improvising with BAG on the recorder, then in weeks 5-8 we're going to start reading BAG melodies from the treble clef staff on recorders. By the end of the quarter, we'll be composing our own melodies! 4th grade will also be working on 16th notes for the first half of the quarter, then in week 5 we will be switching our focus to learning how to read the notes of the treble clef staff.
Check out the videos below of Mrs. Gallinari playing the songs from your recorder packets while you practice over Spring Break! We have had a productive October in 4th grade! We learned solfege syllables Sol, La, and Mi while singing Rain Dance, and we also learned to play the melody on the xylophone. We spent some time working on a chant called Improvisation, and the students used the xylophone to improvise their own melody to the rhythm of the poem. We're continuing to practice reading rhythms and identifying musical form while singing Old House, and soon we're going to compose and perform our own rhythms to add to the song! Coming up, we're continuing our practice of Sol, La, and Mi with a Spanish lullaby called Duerme, Mi Tesoro, and later this month we will add Do to our solfege singing!
We've been working hard in 4th grade! We've been learning rhythms with a poem called Hot Dogs, where students learned about quarter note, 8th note, half note, and whole note. We've also been working on singing some rounds with songs like To Stop the Train and Let Us Chase the Squirrel. Coming up, we're going to be using xylophones and hand drums to accompany ourselves while we sing Let Us Chase the Squirrel and Rain Dance!
I have been loving getting to know my 4th graders in this first week of school! We played a name game called Ickle Ockle, played a steady beat chanting game called Hello There, and started a song called the Follow Your Own Instructions song. I'm looking forward to playing on instruments, singing lots of rounds, and learning to read, improvise, and compose with new rhythms with 4th grade this month!
