1st grade just finished learning about ties and half notes, and we've been working hard on accompanying ourselves on the xylophones with patterns beyond a simple steady beat. For the first four weeks of the fourth quarter, everything is going to be about sol mi la! We're going to be singing in the sol mi la tone set, aurally dictating sol mi la melodies, and improvising sol mi la singing. During weeks five and six, we're going to do some sol mi la composing and play our melodies using tone bells. The last few weeks of the quarter we will be learning how to play broken bordun accompaniments on the xylophones and revisiting everything we learned this year in music.
1st grade has been working hard on bettering our singing voice and learning how to sing, identify, and improvise with sol and mi both in our singing and on the xylophones during the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd quarter we will be switching our focus back to rhythms for a while. For weeks 1-3 we'll be reviewing quarter notes and 8th notes, and introducing quarter rest in into the mix! During weeks 4-6 we'll be learning about how to make longer notes using ties, and then in weeks 7-8 we will introduce half notes. For the last few weeks we will spend some time composing and improvising with all the new rhythms we know.
I've been having a blast with my only 1st grade class, Ms. Davis' class! We've been working very hard on quarter notes and 8th notes in the month of October! We practiced them while singing Apple Tree and Postman. The students even composed their own "letters" of four beats with quarter notes and eighth notes while working on Postman! We have also started learning solfege notes Sol and Mi while singing Doggie, Doggie and Lemonade. Coming up, we're going to learn to keep a steady beat on the xylophone while singing Postman, and we're going to continue our practice of quarter note, eighth note, Sol, and Mi with new songs like Cobbler, Cobbler and Star Light, Star Bright!
We've been doing a lot of learning in first grade! We have been playing lots of singing games like Apple Tree and Doggie, Doggie. We just learned about quarter notes and 8th notes, and we're working on our singing with sol-mi-la songs.
I only have one 1st grade class this year, and I have to say I'm already very impressed with Mrs. Davis' class! We played a fun name game in the first week and we got the opportunity to get to know each other better. This month we're going to be learning all about quarter notes and 8th notes! We'll be identifying these rhythms in the songs we sing, as well as improvising and composing with quarter notes and 8th notes. Soon we will also start learning to play the Orff xylophones, and we'll be using them to accompany ourselves while we sing!
